Intro to Organic Veg Growing

Do you want to grow organic, nutrient rich veggies?

Whether you have a large garden or a small balcony, this workshop will introduce you to growing better quality produce at home.

In this one day workshop you will be introduced to the basics of food growing and learn how to garden with nature using organic principles to  care for and improve the soil ecosystem.  From this session you will take away the skills and confidence to start and grow a food garden at home.

This hands-on workshop includes both theory and practical activities and is designed with the beginner gardener in mind.

Whether you have a large, small or balcony garden, minimal or some gardening experience, this workshop is for you!

We'll explore.

  • Where to locate your garden

  • How to choose which veggies to grow

  • Preparing soil and potting mixes for optimum growth

  • Looking after your veggies through the growing season

  • Different planting and management strategies (crop rotation, companion planting, pest and disease issues)

What you'll learn.

  • What to plant this season

  • How to build healthy, fertile soils

  • How to build a no dig garden bed

  • How to grow food plants from seeds & seedlings

  • Skills to create an abundant, productive garden

Donna is very friendly, knowledgeable and resourceful. Attending her class was both fun and fruitful with lots of valuable information about better ways to mulch and fertilise both soil and plants. It was a very rich and worthwhile experience all round.

About the tutor

Donna Livermore is an experienced educator and food grower with a background in biology, permaculture, wildlife and conservation education.

She is passionate about helping people live a life of good health and food resilience with a focus on growing high quality, nutrient-dense food. Donna has many years of experience growing food on tiny urban sites, and more recently on a larger block in Central Victoria.

One of Donna’s main goals is to help people explore the connection between soil, plant, human (animal) and planetary health through growing a healthy, productive food garden. She is reimagining what it means to live a good life and shares this with others in her community and more widely through her Instagram page, A Good Life in the City & Town.

  • Castlemaine Permaculture Hub reserves the right to cancel workshops and courses due to insufficient numbers.
  • If we cancel the course you will be entitled to a 100% refund, or you may choose to transfer to another date, subject to availability.
  • If you decide to withdraw 14 or more days prior to the course commencement date Castlemaine Permaculture Hub will refund 90% of your payment, retaining 10% to cover administration fees, merchant facility credit card fees and advertising to fill your place.
  • If you decide to withdraw 7 to 14 days prior to the course commencement date Castlemaine Permaculture Hub will refund 50% of your payment, retaining 50% to cover filling your place, administration, and merchant facility credit card fees.
  • If you decide to withdraw less than 7 days prior to the course date Castlemaine Permaculture Hub will retain 100% of your course payment.
  • You may postpone your booking to a future course at no charge providing you notify us more than 7 days before the start of the course.
  • Should Castlemaine Permaculture Hub have to cancel the course due to Government changes relating to the COVD-19 response, we will let you know as soon as possible. Affected participants will be sent a notification that includes details on how to re-book another date or course. While cancellations on our part remain refundable within the specified time period, we do hope you will consider bearing with us in these precarious and trying times, and consider the rescheduled date where possible.
