Find out if goats are a good fit for your life.

Intro to Keeping Goats

Saturday 13th April

9.30am - 4.00pm

About the course

Thinking of keeping goats? This one-day workshop will help you decide if goats are a good fit for your life.

Goats are the ideal homesteader’s companion – they can provide milk, meat, weed control and are endlessly entertaining.

We will run through the various practical considerations for keeping goats, with plenty of time to answer all your questions about goats and goat keeping – as well as the chance to interact with some friendly goats.

This workshop will be held at renown permaculture property Melliodora, where there has been a household dairy goat system running for three decades.

We'll explore

  • the benefits of goats in a system, their yields (eg milk, meat) and the services they can provide (eg vegetation control, joy and companionship)

  • the needs of goats and how these needs can best be met

  • social life and personality of goats, and how an understanding of these is essential in goat husbandry

  • options for feeding goats, including useful plant species

  • whether goats are a good fit for your life and situation

  • the joys of goat keeping, and the potential issues

  • practical tips on goat keeping

  • classroom time discussing the basics of goat management

  • meet some goats, explore their place in a system and look at the infrastructure

  • personal reflection and small group discussion on your personal circumstances – are goats right for you?

  • connect with a community of other goat-minded folk

  • a take-home set of notes for further study and reflection
